Do you have to sit in the classroom for hours on end? And then at home, do you spend a lot of time in the same position surfing the Internet, revising for exams or just chatting to friends online? (1)___ Over a third of the teenage population nowadays are likely to develop chronic back problems. Studies conducted by the British Chiropractic Association have shown that the trend is on the rise as more and more young people are suffering from regular back pain.
Most of us are leading dangerously comfortable lives which do not involve much physical effort. But even regular gym workouts may not be enough to prevent back problems. (2)___ Experts from the charity BackCare have found that nearly a half of those who reported regular low back pain are avid gym members.
Apart from our sedentary lifestyle, scientists also point to another important cause of chronic low back problems among the young population. It seems that the pressures of the fast-paced modern lifestyle also play a role. (3)___ This makes it difficult for our muscles to relax and boosts the production of cortisol, a hormone which increases the risk of muscle inflammation.
‘I can’t do much to change my lifestyle’, you might say. (4)___ Do not ignore low back pain even if it occurs very infrequently. It will be the first warning that you are in danger of developing a chronic back problem.
