Brooklyn Free School has two groups: one for students aged 11–18 and one for students aged 4–11. Students choose their own subjects, don’t have homework, and don’t have to take tests. If they don’t like a lesson, they can leave and go to the student room to read. When I visited, three young kids were doing that. There are different subjects, like film writing and building design. Building design is very popular.
Some people think this school is a bad idea. They think it doesn’t teach students important things for life, and they think only rich families go there. But only 20% of students pay the full price.
What do the students think? One student, Marlon, says he likes a class where they watched a TV show about city life. He learned a lot. In another class, students talked about how people make decisions and then ate at local restaurants and chose their favorite one. Marlon also liked making models of other students in design class.
At first, Marlon found the school difficult. It took him more than a year to feel comfortable. In the first year, he spent most of his time playing computer games in the student room. Now he enjoys the classes and says he wouldn’t want to go to any other school.
