Our planet is home to an incredible variety of animal species, but sadly, many of them are on the verge of extinction. Here are just a few examples of animals that desperately need our help.
Orangutans are native to the Indonesian island of Sumatra, but their population has declined rapidly in recent years due to deforestation and hunting. It is estimated that fewer than 14,000 Sumatran orangutans remain in the wild, making them one of the world's most endangered species.
The Amur leopard is a beautiful big cat that lives in the forests of eastern Russia. Sadly, it is also one of the rarest animals on Earth, with only around 100 individuals left in the wild. The main threats to the Amur leopard's survival are habitat loss and poaching for its fur.
The Javan rhino is one of the rarest large mammals in the world. It used to be found throughout Southeast Asia, but today there are thought to be fewer than 70 individuals left in the wild, all of which live in Indonesia's Ujung Kulon National Park. The Javan rhino is critically endangered due to poaching and habitat loss caused by human activities.
Hawksbill turtles are known for their beautiful shell, which is highly valued in the illegal trade. This, along with other threats such as pollution and climate change, has had a devastating impact on their population. Today, there may be as few as 15,000 adult female hawksbill turtles left worldwide.
These are just a few examples of the many animals that are facing extinction. It's up to all of us to do what we can to protect them and ensure their survival for future generations.
