Down to Earth
The village of Matmata is on the slope of a hill in South Tunisia. Matmata is a very unusual place and a favourite tourist destination. Why? Because of its underground homes!
In Matmata, the Berber people build their homes under the ground. This is a one-thousand year old tradition. Today there are more than 100 underground houses and there is even an underground hotel!
The climate in Tunisia is very hot, so living under the ground is a very good idea! The temperature is always the same. At night, when the desert is very cold, it is comfortably warm in a cave and during the day when the sun shines down, the caves are cool. The houses are 5 to 10 metres deep and they have many small rooms used for sleeping, keeping food and getting together. You can go from one room to another through small tunnels.
Life is simple here. The women stay at home and do household chores, while the wen work on the land. A lot of people can show you around their houses. Do some of the Matmata houses seem familiar to you? Maybe they do because they appear in the film Star Wars!

"Good idea," said the cranes. "But, for the plan to succeed, you will have to keep your mouth closed tightly on the stick and you must not say a word!’ The turtle agreed and off he was carried.
“Why are you late?" the lion roared when the rabbit arrived. "I’m late because of the other lion," said the rabbit. "In my jungle? Take me to this other lion,“ the lion said angrily. The rabbit led the lion to a deep well and told him to look to. The lion saw himself in the water and roared! The sound of his roar bounced right back at him as an echo.
The animals of the jungle made a bargain with a lion. One animal each day would willingly go to the lion's den to be his supper and, in turn, the lion would never hunt again. The first to go to the lion’s den was a shy rabbit, who went slowly.
When the birds were high in the air with the turtle dangling down from the stick, some people on the ground looked up at the strange sight in the sky and said, 'What clever birds! They figured out how to carry a turtle!" The proud, talkative turtle cried out, "It was my idea!" and fell tumbling down to earth.
A talkative turtle overheard two hunters say that they were planning to catch turtles the very next day. When the hunters left, the turtle asked two cranes to help him escape. "Beautiful white birds." he said, "if you hold a long stick between your beaks, I’ll close my mouth tightly in the middle of it, and then you can fly up and carry me to safety.”
"I alone am king of this jungle", he roared again. His echo answered him. "I alone am king of this jungle." With that, the lion became so angry, he jumped into the deep well with a great splash! The lion attacked his own reflection and was never heard from again.

In search of the Afghan Girl
She was one of the world’s most famous faces, yet no one knew her name for 15 whole years! Now, her identity is revealed! Back in 1985, photographer Steve McCurry visited a refugee camp in Pakistan. He took the picture of an Afghan refugee, a 12 year old girl who was a student at a school in the camp. Her face appeared on the cover of the National Geographic magazine and her green eyes captured people’s hearts all over die world.
Since then, Steve McCurry travelled to Afghanistan many times to find her but without success. In January 2002, a National Geographic team managed to track her down. To make certain she was the right woman, the team used special technology that matched the iris of her eyes to that of the photograph.
Her name is Sharbat Gula. She is now in her 30s and lives in a remote region of Afghanistan with her husband and three daughters. Gula had never seen the famous portrait before and had no idea her face was so popular. However, she remembered the day Steve McCurry took her picture, as this was the first and only time she ever had her picture taken!
