The Land of Fantasy
Maybe you don’t know the name ‘Fiordland’ but you probably know the place. It’s one of the amazing places in The Lord of the Rings films and it’s in New Zealand. So it’s no surprise that the director of the films, Peter Jackson, is from Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.
Fiordland is on South Island, New Zealand and the name comes from the Norwegian word ‘fjord’. A fjord is a long, narrow area of sea between high cliffs. In fact, with its 14 fjords, the Fiordland coast is very much like Norway. The best known fjord is Milford Sound because it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world. It’s a great place for walking and water sports of all kinds.
But if you like The Lord of the Rings films, you can also go on some brilliant tours of famous places in the films. You can take the same trip as Frodo and his friends on the ‘River Anduin’ and see the ‘Misty Mountains’. There’s also ‘Fanghorn Forest’ nearby, but don’t expect the trees to walk or talk! On the North Island, there are lots of other places from the films: ‘the Shire’: the home of the Hobbits, ‘Helms Deep’ and even ‘Mordor’: the capital of the Dark Lord, ‘Sauron’. But don’t worry; scary Sauron doesn’t live there anymore.
Peter Jackson is from Norway.
