The First Mobile Phone

On June 10, 1946 in St. Louis, Missouri, the first mobile phone was used with a handset closely resembling that of a regular telephone. The user had to press a button to speak and then release it in order to listen. The phone, located underneath the dashboard of a car, weighed 32.6kgs! By 1948, approximately 100 cities in the United States had a cellular network. Three people could use the line at one time and the calls would occur simultaneously. Additionally, a person would have to wait 30 minutes to place a call.

Technological Advances

On April 3, 1973, Martin Cooper from the Motorola company placed the first wireless call on a 1.3kg, 23cm phone. After charging for ten hours, the phone could be used for as long as 30 minutes! In 1983, a phone could store up to 30 phone numbers and cost only $4000! The very first flip phone was released in 1997. The QWERTY keyboard emerged in 2003 but the phone had to be used with headphones since it was not equipped with a speaker. The most highly purchased flip phone was the Motorola

Razr V3, selling 130 million world-wide! Lastly, WIFI on a cell phone was introduced in 2005 by Blackberry. In 2006, Nokia created the first smartphone, equipped with a five megapixel camera, WIFI, and Bluetooth.

Users

Around the world, six billion people possess a cell phone subscription, compared to 5,000 customers in 1948. In the United States, 91 percent of adults have a cell phone and 61 percent of those own a smart phone. In 1948, a monthly cell phone bill cost 15 dollars plus 30 to 40 cents per local call. Currently, a smart phone bill will be over 100 dollars but includes unlimited phone, data, and text usage.

Health and Social Concerns

Although cell phones are a useful addition to people's lives, they also present various concerns. The primary health issue is that cell phones distract us while walking and driving. Texters have been known to run right into someone or trip and fall while using their phones. Distractions have caused a large amount of deaths on the road in the United States. Socially, people are communicating less and less outside of the electronic realm. People would rather text than call and would rather call than visit. Additionally, cyberbullying has become more commonplace.

Uses of a Cell Phone

People have cell phones for a variety of reasons. Most adults enjoy the ability to call in cases of emergency, to listen to music, and to navigate while driving. Interestingly, President Obama is only allowed to use a Blackberry since iPhones are more easily hacked into. Children mainly use their phones to contact their friends, averaging over 2000 texts a month. Social media is easily connected to via their phones and many games are free to download.
