Celebrating in costume
Nowadays, it is popular in some countries to wear fancy dress on diff erent occasions – Halloween, Carnival, at birthday parties, sporting events, and so on. But the tradition of wearing costumes to celebrate festivals goes back hundreds of years. From around the 17th century, people in Venice, Italy, celebrated Carnival with masquerade balls (dancing parties) where they wore special masks and long, black cloaks (like coats without arms) called Dominoes. Masquerade balls then became popular across Europe and by the 18th century they were so popular in London that a special building, the Pantheon, was built to have them in. During the 19th century, wearing masks went out of fashion but costume parties, where guests dressed up as characters from books or famous historical fi gures, were very popular. Some people took their costumes very seriously: at one party in the USA a woman dressed up as the tragic French queen Marie Antoinette and wore jewellery which had actually belonged to Marie Antoinette herself! The British Queen Victoria and her husband, Prince Albert, liked fancy dress so much that in 1842 they invited 2,000 guests to a costume ball at Buckingham Palace where they dressed up as King Edward III and his wife Queen Philippa. More recently, in 2003, Prince William celebrated his 21st birthday with a fancy dress party where 300 guests, including Queen Elizabeth, wore African-themed costumes.
