On 21–22 October 2022, the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine hosted a round-table discussion titled “Trustworthiness of sociological knowledge: Theoretico-methodological, empirical and discursive aspects”. The event was dedicated to the memory of V.M. Vorona, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, Director of the Institute of Sociology from 1992 to 2021, a laureate of the State Prize in Science and Technology. The discussion was held online. The following issues were raised: a) theoretical underpinnings, methodological principles and empirical criteria of trustworthiness; b) approaches and research tools for assessing trustworthiness; c) factors influencing the trustworthiness of research data; d) problems related to the trustworthiness of data and solidity of conclusions in quantitative and qualitative studies; e) challenges for mass social surveys in Ukraine in time of war, etc.
About 15 talks and presentations were given. Participants of the round table represented a number of academic, research and educational institutions such as the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”, V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Odesa Polytechnic National University, Bohdan Khmelnytsky Melitopol State Pedagogical University, M.V. Ptoukha Institute for Demography and Social Studies of the NAS of Ukraine, Sociological Service at the Ukrainian Centre for Economic and Political Studies named after Oleksandr Razumkov, Masaryk University (Czech Republic), as well as the “Extreme Scan” independent sociological community.
The discussion was moderated by Olha Maksymenko (Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine), Olena Kniazieva (the “Pulse” Sociological Centre for Information and Research) and Maksym Kasianczuk (Eurasian Coalition on Health, Rights, Gender and Sexual Diversity). As for technical support to the event, it was fully provided by Serhii Dembitskyi, Deputy Director of the Institute of Sociology. Most of the participants’ talks and presentations were followed by questions, comments and debates.
