If you use the carrot and stick approach, you persuade somebody to try harder by offering them a reward if they do, or a punishment if they do not.
If something is given to you on a silver platter, you do not have to make any effort to get it.
Butter someone up = to flatter someone in the hopes of receiving special treatment
Cut the mustard = come up to expectations; reach the required standard.
When mustard was one of the main crops in East Anglia (a geographical area in the East of England), it was cut by hand with scythes, in the same way as corn. The crop could grow up to six feet high and this was very arduous work, requiring extremely sharp tools. When blunt they “would not cut the mustard”. So, if something (or someone) doesn’t cut the mustard that means they don’t meet the required standard.
If you have egg on your face, you look stupid because of something that you have done.
As cool as a cucumber = very calm and showing control, especially in a difficult situation.
Gravy train = a type of work or activity that provides a lot of money without much effort.
Not for all the tea in China = not even for a great reward.
The cherry on the cake is the final thing that makes something perfect.
If you say that something is the best thing since sliced bread, you think it is extremely good, interesting, etc.
If you take something with a pinch of salt, you do not believe that it is completely accurate or true.
Walk on eggshells = to be very careful about what you say or do to someone because they are easily upset or offended.
