Take a leaf from/out of someone’s book = to copy someone’s behaviour and do things in the same way that they do, because they are successful.
Bring someone to book = to punish someone for doing something wrong and make them explain their behaviour.
Throw the book at someone = to punish someone who has committed an offence as severely as possible.
Every trick in the book = every available method, whether it is honest or not.
The oldest trick in the book = a way of tricking someone that is still effective although it has been used a lot before.
If you learn something in the school of hard knocks, you learn it as a result of difficult or unpleasant experiences.
Read between the lines = to try to understand someone's real feelings or intentions from what they say or write.
