Good afternoon, my dear Australian colleagues! It’s so wonderful to see you again! As you all probably know, I’m a Ukrainian sociologist who works at an academic institution in Kyiv. I feel proud to say that our institute continues working despite the war, continues doing research and organising events. For instance, in late April we managed to hold an online round-table discussion which focused on the sociology of education. The motto of this discussion sounded as follows: “Education as a realm of sociological research and a prerequisite for the survival of society in extraordinary circumstances”. We brought together social researchers, secondary school teachers, psychologists and journalists from Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. In total, about 30 people took part in the event by submitting a short research paper on the topic, giving an online presentation from home, delivering a 10-minute speech, making or posting comments, as well as sending PowerPoint slides to acquaint the audience with the methodology and results of their research. In this connection, I’d like to express my cordial thanks to Christina Ho and Quentin Maire for kindly permitting me to make my Ukrainian colleagues familiar with what their Australian counterparts are currently studying. I feel extremely glad to say that both presentations sparked a considerable interest. A few questions also arose, for example about performance assessment in Australian schools. I wrote a brief summary for each presentation in Ukrainian and published them on the Facebook page of our thematic group. Besides, the editor-in-chief of our academic quarterly kindly invites you to publish your presentation as a short research paper. Thank you for listening to me!
