I am glad to see you. Can you guess why? (it’s spring and the weather is fine, you like English very much, it’ pleasant to meet us).

- Do you like spring? - What do you like to do in spring? - Have you had the weather forecast for today? - I am happy to see you happy and healthy today.

- From the very ancient times people wanted to explore other countries. They used primitive transport, they spent much time to get somewhere and tried, and tried, and tried.

To whatever part of the world you went

By wheel or sail, or wing, or track,

You’ll have exciting things to tell

Now that you are safely back.

So, today we are going to have TV link “Kyiv – London” and we’ll answer the questions:

- What is the best way to see the sights in a strange city? - What should one do to know more about a strange city? - What should one do when coming to a strange city? - What places would you see first when in London? - How can you find places on the map?

What do you do first of all when you come to a strange city?

- find out all about the history of the city and all monuments; - go to the Zoo; - go to the museums; - visit the art galleries; - buy a guide-book to the city; - study the recommended sightseeing routes; - buy a map of the city.

If you want to know more about a strange city, you should:

- read a guide-book to the city; - ask a resident of the city to show you round; - ask someone who knows the city to take you for a drive in a car; - make a guided tour of the city.

Our group will be divided into 2 groups:

1 – correspondents from Ukraine;

2 – British correspondents

English correspondents will tell us some interesting facts about their country, present the sightseeings of London. Ukrainian correspondents ask as many questions as you can to know about London and they will represent Ukraine.

Ukr. – Hello! We are from Ukraine. Where are you from?

Eng. – Hi! We are from London.

Ukr. – Everybody knows Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine and the seat of the Supreme Council, and the Cabinet of Ministers. It is one of the most ancient cities. In 1982 it was 1500 years old. And what about London?

Eng. – Oh, London is the capital of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The name London came from the Romans. They called the town Londinium.

Ukr. – We know that Great Britain is a monarchy. Where does the Queen live?

Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace is the London residence of the Queen. It was built as a country house for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703 and was bought by King George III in 1762. Buckingham Palace has been the official royal residence since 1837. Buckingham Palace is like a small town, with a police station, two postoffices, a hospital, a bar, two sports clubs, a disco, a cinema and a swimming pool. There are 600 rooms and 3 miles of red carpet. About 700 people work in the Palace. At 11.30 daily, the soldiers at Buckingham Palace Change the Guard. It takes about 30 minutes and hundreds of visitors come to watch. And in August and September you can usually visit some of the rooms in the palace. But there are always lots of people coming to see them, so be ready to wait. 22 You can also visit the Royal Mews at the palace. This is the home of the Queen's horses and coaches. The Queen's Gallery is also at the palace, and you can visit it at most times of the year. Here you can see pictures from all over the world.

The Houses of Parliament

The Houses of Parliament is the home of the British government. It is a very large Gothic building. It stands on the left bank of the river Thames. There is only one building there but is called the Houses because it is divided into two Chambers — the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The Palace of Westminster, usually known as the Houses of Parliament was used both as a royal residence and as a parliament house until 1512. There are two towers in the Palace of West: the Victoria Tower and the Clock Tower. The clock came into service in 1859 and was nicknamed Big Ben. Big Ben is the biggest clock bell in Britain. You have to go up 374 steps to reach the top. The clock bell was called Big Ben after Sir Benjamin Hall. Benjamin was a very tall and stout man, whose nickname was Big Ben. One day he said in Parliament, "Shall we call the bell St. Stephen's?" St. Stephen is the name of the tower. But someone joked, "Why not call it Big Ben?" Now the bell is known all over the world by that name.

10 Downing Street

The Prime Minister - the head of the British government - lives at 10 Downing Street. Downing Street is named after its builder, Sir George Downing. Walk along Parliament Street to Whitehall, past the government buildings, and you can see the little street on your left.

Ukr. – Kyiv lies on both banks of the Dnieper river and is one of the greenest cities in the world. Where is London situated?

Eng. – Tower Bridge London stands on the river Thames. There is Tower Bridge over the river Thames. It can go up and down. Tower Bridge is one of the most famous bridges in the city and first opened in 1894. From here you can see the Tower of London.

The Tower of London

The Tower of London is London's oldest landmark and one of the most famous buildings of the city. More than two million people visit it every year. Yeoman Warders (also called Beefeaters) tell them all about the Tower. It was built around the central white Tower in 11th century. It was begun by William the Conqueror in 1078. The Tower of London served as a fortress, a palace, a zoo, a royal mint and a prison. Today it is a national monument and museum. There are a lot of interesting collections in the Tower of London. You can see the Crown Jewels and visit the Bloody Tower and the White Tower. The collection includes Saint Edward's Crown, used for the coronation ceremony, the 23 Imperial State Crown, containing 300 jewels, and the biggest cut diamond in the world, the "Star of Africa". The Beefeaters guard the Tower. A group of ravens lives at the Tower. The legend says that without them the Tower will fall. The Raven Master is the person who gives them food.

Eng. – I have heard that Kyiv is an industrial, scientific and cultural centre of Ukraine. Is it really so?

Ukr. – You are right. Kyiv is one of the largest industrial, scientific and cultural centre of Ukraine. It has many places of interest. Among them : the Golden Gate, which is about 1000 years old. On the B.Khmelnitsky square there is the St.Sophia’s Cathedral. There is the monastery ensemble, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. - What are the main historical places of interest in London?

St. Paul's Cathedral

St. Paul's Cathedral is the most famous church in London. St. Paul's serves as the center of the Church of England in London. The great English architect Sir Christopher Wren built the Church between 1675 and 1710 to replace the original St. Paul's, which was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. The church's huge dome towers 111 meters above the ground. Its dome has become a symbol of London throughout the world.

Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is a royal church. It is one of the oldest buildings in London and one of the most important religious centers in the country. Nearly all kings and queens of Britain were crowned and buried there. Elizabeth II was crowned in 1953 by the archbishop of Canterbury. Parts of the Abbey are for the memorials and tombs of famous people. In Poet's Corner many famous British poets, playwrights and novelists are buried and commemorated: Chaucer, Shakespeare, Walter Scott and Shelley. Near the entrance to the Abbey, you can see the tomb of the Unknown Warrior. It honours all British soldiers who died in the First World War.

Eng. – In London there are a lot of monuments. And what about Kyiv?

Ukr. – Oh, in the park of Immortal Glory there is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, over which an eternal fire burns. Besides you can see the monument to T.Shevchenko, L.Ukrainka, M.Lysenko and many others. We are sure there are a lot of monuments to London’s national heroes. Is it really so?

Eng. – You are right. In London there are monuments to the most famous national heroes. In the City is a very tall building — 60.6 meters high-called the Monument. Christopher Wren built this, too, and it stands on the place where the Fire of London began in 1666. It is situated not for from St. Paul's Cathedral.

Trafalgar Square Nelson's Column

Trafalgar Square, the main square of central London, where a number of famous buildings and monuments, including the National Gallery and Nelson's Column are situated. The square is popular with visitors who come to relax by the fountains there or to feed the pigeons. Nelson's Column is a high column nearly 44 m with a statue of Admiral Nelson who defeated the French at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
