The zero conditional is one of four types of hypothetical sentences in English. In this lesson, we are going to look at how and when we can use it.
1
Conditionals are structures that we use when talking about possible actions and their results. The zero conditional is a form that expresses what always happens if or when a certain action takes place.
We can make a zero conditional sentence with two Present Simple verbs (one in the 'if clause' and one in the 'main clause'):
If + present simple, .... present simple.
This conditional is used when the result will always happen.
For example:
If water reaches 100 degrees, it always boils. It's a fact!
note
The two clauses can come in any order.
In written English, if the conditional clause comes first, you put a comma between it and the main clause.
You don't use a comma if the main clause comes first.
The 'if' in this conditional can usually be replaced by 'when' without changing the meaning.
For example:
If water reaches 100 degrees, it boils.
When water reaches 100 degrees, it always boils.
Here are some more examples:
If people eat too much fast food, they get fat.
If you touch a fire, you get burned.
People die if they don't eat.
You get water if you mix hydrogen and oxygen.
Snakes bite if they are scared.
If babies are hungry, they cry.
Let's watch the video. This video explains how can we use the zero conditional form in real-life situations.
