As you know, second conditionals talk about things in the present or future, and third conditionals talk about things in the past. So, the if-clause and the main clause both talk about the same time period.

  • Today, let’s look at something different- this is called a ‘mixed conditional’ type 2.
We use it to describe how a present trait or state would have changed a past event.

    🎥Watch the BBC video explanation.

  • The if-clause describes something true now, and the main clause describes a consequence in the past.

    💡The structure is:
if + past simple(like the second conditional), → would have + past participle.(like the third conditional)

    Example:
If I was not /wasn'tso scared of flying, I would have been/would've been to so many more interesting places in the world.

Condition (if-clause): past simple Result (main clause): would + have + past participle

💡We can use short forms as well:
If I wasn't so scared of flying, I would've been to so many more interesting places in the world.

💡You can change the order of the sentence, and the meaning stays the same:
I would have been to so many more interesting places in the world if I was not so scared of flying.

  • We use it when we talk about something that’s generally true in the present and its imaginary result in the past.
This is usually when we want to explain why we did or didn’t do something in the past.
If he wasn't/weren't so lazy, he wouldn't have failed the exam. =He is generally lazy, but there was one specific moment in the past when he failed an exam. His general laziness caused him to fail the exam.

  • In natural spoken English, 'have' is also often shortened, so the whole thing can sound very fast and light - almost like 'd've ':
If I earned more money, I'd've bought a bigger flat.

📝Your Turn to Write! ✍️

  1. Use the structure below to make your own three sentences.
if + past simple, would have + past participle (V3).

    1...
    2...
    3...

  2. Imagine how one past decision/ event changed your present today.
Write a short paragraph (3-5 sentences) using Mixed Conditionals (Type 2) to share your story.

    Example:
If I weren't so shy, I would have spoken to more people at yesterday's conference. I usually find it hard to start conversations with strangers. Next time, I will try to be braver!
