Welcome to Today’s Grammar Time-Travel! ⏳
Have you ever wondered how a past decision shapes your life right now?
Today, we’re mastering Mixed Conditionals (Past to Present)!
We’ll watch a quick video explanation, practice, and write our own 'what if' stories.
Let’s go!
1
As you know, second conditionals talk about things in the present or future, and third conditionals talk about things in the past. So, the if-clause and the main clause both talk about the same time period.
Today, let’s look at something different- this is called a ‘mixed conditional’.
We can create mixed conditionals, which happen when the "if" part and the result part refer to different times. The most common setup is imagining how a fake past scenario would change our present reality.
📝The structure is:
If + Past Perfect (like the third conditional), would + infinitive (like the second conditional)
💡We can change the order (would + infinitive if + Past Perfect), but the meaning stays the same.
We use this structure to look back at the past and imagine a different now. Since the past event didn't actually happen, we're just playing "what if" with its effects on the present. It’s incredibly useful for talking about past actions—or missed opportunities—and figuring out how they would change our current situation.
If Bob had gone to bed earlier last night, he wouldn't be so tired now.
(In reality, Bob didn’t go to bed earlier last night, and so he is tired now.)
We can make short forms of verbs 'had' and 'would' when we speak and write.
✏️In the if-clause, where we have 'had + past participle', we can shorten 'had' to ' d ':
If we'd taken a taxi, we would be at the restaurant by now. (this means 'if I had')
✏️In the main clause, where we have 'would + infinitive', we can also shorten 'would' to 'd ':
If we had taken a taxi, we'd be at the restaurant by now. (this means 'I would')
✏️In natural speech, we usually shorten both at the same time:
If we'd taken a taxi, we'd be at the restaurant by now.
And now, watch the video explanation of the rule.

Use the structure If + past perfect, would + infinitive to make your own three sentences.

Imagine how one past decision or event affects your life today. Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) using the mixed conditional structure.
💡 Example:
Three years ago, Nick decided to study graphic design. If he hadn’t chosen that path then, he wouldn’t be working on such exciting creative projects today. It was one of the best decisions of his life.
Awesome work today! 🎉
You’ve mastered connecting past events to your present reality!
Well done!
