Read the text below. Match choices (A—H) to (1—5). There are three choices you don’t need to use.
Are you thinking of choosing or changing your career? Maybe you have been dreaming about a career change but don’t know where to start. Discover how to find the best career path for you, including finding the courage to make a change, researching options, realising your strengths, and learning new skills.
(1) _____ So how do you translate your interests into a new career? A bit of research — and you may be surprised at the careers that relate to many of the things you love to do. Questions, quizzes, and temperament sorters can’t tell you what your perfect career would be, but they can help you to identify what’s important to you in a career, what you enjoy doing, and where you excel.
(2) _____ It’s also a good idea to talk to someone currently working in your chosen career. This gives you a real sense of what type of work you will actually be doing and if it meets your expectations. What’s more, you will start to build connections in your new career area, helping you to land a job in the future.
(3) ____ Once you have a general idea of your career path, take some time to figure out what skills you have and what skills you need. Remember, you’re not completely starting from nothing — you already have some skills to start. These skills are called transferable skills, and they can be applied to almost any field.
(4) ____ If your chosen career requires skills or experience you lack, don’t despair. There are many ways to gain needed skills. While learning, you’ll also have an opportunity to find out whether you truly enjoy your chosen career and also make connections that could lead to your dream job. So, take classes. Some careers require specific education or skills, such as an educational degree or specific training. Many fields have accelerated programmes if you already have some education, or you may be able to do night classes or part-time schooling so that you can continue to work.
(5) ____ You might be feeling so busy with the career building that you barely have time to sleep or eat. However, managing stress, eating right, and taking time for sleep, exercise and especially loved ones will ensure you have the stamina for the big changes ahead.
A Take care of yourself.
B Consider starting your own business.
C Research specific careers.
D Evaluate your strengths and skills.
E Get support and information from others.
F Identify occupations that match your interests.
G Develop your skills and experience.
H Pace yourself and don’t take on too much.

ROGER, THE GARDENER
Do you know the best thing that ever happened to me? Do you know what it was? It was when I lost my last job. Yes, really! I never liked it. I hated it in fact – stuck in an office all day with computers and a telephone. Now my hobby is my full-time job! I start work very early…in summer I usually leave home about 5:30 in the morning, but in winter not until 8.00. I have a small van, and I carry all my tools and equipment in that. It’s autumn now so I am tidying the gardens- I am picking up leaves and pulling up old summer flowers. Oh, and I am planting bulbs as well. I am planting lots of daffodils and tulips. Every season is so different and I love them all. I just love working outside in the open air after all those years in a stuffy office. I never noticed the seasons there!
After work I always go home and relax in a hot bath. I have a flat in London but most of my work is outside of London, in the suburbs. I am not married but I live with my girlfriend, Fiona. I usually cook our evening meal because she gets home from work after me. She is a graphic designer and earns a lot of money, much more than me. She earns more but I think I enjoy my work more.
At weekends we often drive into the country and go to antique shops and antique sales. I collect old radios, you see. We don’t have a television. Can you believe? Everybody has one these days but we don’t… I collect old radios and Fiona collects old cookery books. We take our dog, we have a lovely dog, and we like taking it on long walks.
I think there is one problem with my job. It’s seasonal, so I do not earn much in the autumn and winter. I am not earning much at the moment. I earn most money in spring and summer. But it’s OK, I earn enough, not enough to eat out often in expensive restaurants or go to shows, but enough for my dog and hobby.
I am a very happy man.
Answer the questions
What’s the best thing that ever happened to him?
Where does he live?
Are there any problems with his job?
Does he often eat out in restaurants?
