Grammar Revision
Hello, students! Let's revise our grammar knowledge about using article "The" with geographical names.
- We use article “the” with:
- rivers, seas and oceans: the Thames River, the Black Sea, the Atlantic Ocean;
- we have to use “the” with group of lakes but don’t have to use with one lake: The Great Lakes but Lake Ontario;
- we have to use “the” with group of mountains but don’t have to use with one mountain: The Carpathian Mountains but Mount Hoverla;
- we have to use “the” with group of islands but don’t have to use with one island: The Polynesian Islands but Tasmania Island;
- we don’t use “the” with names of countries: Ukraine, England, Scotland; but we always say “the” with USA, UK, Netherlands and Philippines! And we always use “the” if we have words “Kingdom” or “Republic”: Great Britain, but THE United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland; Ireland but The Republic of Ireland; and, also, America but The USA;
- we needn’t use “the” with cities, towns or villages;
- we needn’t use “the” with continents;
- we don’t use “the” with names of streets: Green Street. But there is only one street in the world with article: The High Street which is in England.
