For vs. Since

Knowing when to use FOR and when to use SINCE is important. Therefore it is useful to look at a summary of the contrast between FOR and SINCE.

Both For and Since are most commonly used with the perfect tense - we don't use these expressions in the present tense.

While we can use For in the simple past tense we can't use Since in the simple past tense. Since can only be used in the perfect tense.

Remember!

both For and Since have other meanings in English that are not associated with time.

• Since you asked, I'll say yes.

• Since he didn't study he didn't pass the exam.

1. It's the first time I've eaten snails ........ I was in France on holiday.

2. The film lasted ...... two hours.

3. ..... 1989, no one has lived here.

4. She hasn't been here ...... a month.

5. I hadn't heard from them .... ages.

6. I learned German ..... two years while I was at school.

7. The film's been on at cinemas ........ Tuesday.

8. She's been working there ...... eighteen months.

9. There haven't been any wolves in England ........ a long time.

10. They've known about it ...... a long time.
