Now you are going to read about our new grammar topic.
Relative clauses. Defining and Non-defining relative clauses
We use relative pronouns (who/whose/which/that) and relative adverbs (where/when/that/why) to introduce relative clause. We use relative clauses to identify/describe the person/place/thing in the main clause.
A defining relative clause gives necessary information essential to the meaning of the main sentence. It is not put in commas and is introduced with who, which, that, whose, where, when, or the reason (why). The relative pronoun can be omitted when it is the object of the relative clause.
A non-defining relative clause gives extra information and is not essential to the meaning of the main sentence. It is put in commas and is introduced with who, whom, which, whose, where, or when. The relative pronoun cannot be omitted.

Check your answers and read the explanation!
Halloween was started by the Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago, in an area that is now known as Ireland.
In this sentence, "who lived 2,000 years ago" is a non-defining relative clause, providing additional information about the Celts. The commas set it off to indicate that it's not essential to the main sentence.
The Celts celebrated their New Year on the 1st of November, which marked the end of summer and the beginning of the dark, cold winter.
In this sentence, "which marked the end of summer and the beginning of the dark, cold winter" is a defining relative clause that specifies the significance of the 1st of November. No commas are used because the information is essential to the meaning of the main sentence.
