Basic of DOTA 2
1
Dota 2 is a competitive multiplayer online MOBA game that requires strategic thinking, teamwork, and fast decision-making. In this lesson, students will explore the theoretical foundations of the game in order to better understand how and why decisions are made during a match.
Before learning new material, students should recall basic elements of Dota 2. These include heroes, items , lanes, and the main objective of the game. Students are encouraged to think about their own experience and how they usually play matches, including what roles they prefer and how they make decisions
The topic of this lesson is Basic Game Structure and Strategy in Dota 2.
The objective of the lesson is to understand the map structure, hero roles, core mechanics, and the importance of objectives and meta-based decisions.
2
Dota 2 is played on a map with three lanes, a jungle, and a river and objectives such as Roshan
and Tormentor
. Players earn gold and experience by killing creeps, neutral units, and enemy heroes. Gold is used to buy items, while experience allows heroes to level up and improve their abilities and talents.
Each hero fulfills a role within the team, such as carry 1 pos
, mid 2 pos
, offlane(hard lane)3 pos
, hard support 5pos
and soft support 4 pos
. While heroes are not strictly limited to one position, their roles are usually determined by common strategies and the current meta. Team success depends on proper role distribution and coordination.
Attributes are the main statistics of all heroes that independently determine most scaling statistics. Strength
, Agility
, Intelligence
and Universal
Every hero has a primary attribute, which modifies their main attack damage per 1 point of primary attribute. A hero's primary attribute heavily impacts and commonly even defines the hero's role and how they are played. For example, Intelligence attribute symbol intelligence heroes are typically more dependent on abilities. A hero's primary attribute typically grows faster than the other two attributes.
Strength
Strength
is a measure of a hero's toughness and endurance. Strength determines a hero's maximum health and health regeneration. Heroes with strength as their primary attribute can be hard to kill, so they often take initiator and tank roles, initiating fights and taking most of the damage from enemy attacks.
Every point in Strength attribute symbol strength increases:
Maximum health by 22.
Health regeneration by 0.09.
For strength heroes, every point in strength also increases main attack damage by 1.
Examples of strenght heroes:
Axe
, Pudge
, Dawnbreaker
Agility
Agility
is a measure of a hero's swiftness and dexterity. Agility determines a hero's armor and attack speed. Heroes with agility as their primary attribute tend to be more dependent on their physical attacks and items, and are usually capable of falling back on their abilities in a pinch. Agility heroes often take carry and gank roles.
Every point in Agility attribute symbol agility increases:
Armor by 1/6.
Attack speed by 1.
For agility heroes; every point in agility also increases main attack damage by 1.
Examples of agility heroes:
Anti-mage
, Medusa
, Phantom Assasin
Intelligence
Intelligence
is a measure of a hero's wit and wisdom. Intelligence determines a hero's maximum mana, mana regeneration and magic resistance. Heroes with intelligence as their primary attribute tend to rely on their abilities to deal damage or help others. Intelligence heroes often take support, gank, and pusher roles.
Every point in Intelligence attribute symbol intelligence increases:
Maximum mana by 12.
Mana regeneration by 0.05.
Magic resistance by 0.1%.
For intelligence heroes, every point in intelligence also increases main attack damage by 1.
Examples of intelligence heroes:
Invoker
, Oracle
, Queen Of Pain
Universal
Universal
heroes are like jack of all trades and benefit from every attribute. While they dont gain that much from building a single main attribute, their strength lies in the flexibility to choose items based on their specific abilities and bonuses not so much on the item's attributes. So they can always switch between the support and carry roles based on their itembuild, not bound by a main attribute.
Every point of Strength
/ Agility
/ Intelligence
attribute increases:
Main attack damage by 0.7.
Examples of universal heroes:
Arc Warden
,Io
Marci
Primary attribute of a hero can be changed with patches, f.e. Arc Warden was an agility hero once, and Invoker was an Universal hero instead of Inteligence.
Objectives such as towers, Roshan(by killing him you get the Aegis
, an item that gives you second life after death) Tormentor (gives gold and aghanim shard
, an item that grants a new skill or enhances an existing one, to one of two players with the lowest networth in team. ) and map control are more important than individual kills. Vision, gained through wards
, also plays a key role in strategic decision-making. The game is constantly updated through patches, which influence hero strength and overall strategy.
3
For new players, it is important to choose heroes with simple abilities and clear roles. Heroes such as Wraith King
for carry, Sniper
for mid, Zeus
for soft support, Bristleback
for oflane, and Ogre magi for hard support
are good starting options because they are easy to understand and forgiving of mistakes. You can check hero type and complexity ingame with this filter
which will highlight required heroes.
Beginners should focus on learning one role instead of switching between many. Playing the same role helps build game understanding, confidence, and consistency. Support or safe lane carry roles are often recommended for new players. Most of the new players play support positions.
At the beginning, new players should follow in-game recommended item builds. These builds are designed to match the hero’s role and current meta and help avoid common itemization mistakes.
For example here is a build for Carry Wraith King.
You can build for any hero and position ingame, or on specialized websites f.e. ProTracker
Vision wins games. Even basic ward placement helps beginners avoid danger and understand enemy movement. Learning simple ward spots is a strong first step toward strategic play. You can learn new wards by yourself or with the help of guides
The minimap provides crucial information about enemy movement and team positioning, especially when you have good vision trough good wards placement. Beginners should develop the habit of checking the minimap frequently to avoid ganks and make safer decisions.

In Dota 2, understanding and tracking timings is a key skill that helps players make better decisions and gain advantages over the enemy team. Many important events in the game happen at fixed time intervals, and being aware of them improves map control and efficiency.
Bounty runes
always first to spawn at 00:00 at all spawn locations and then spawn every three minutes at specified locations on the map and provide gold to the team.
Two water runes
spawn at both sides of the river at minute 2 and 4 restore some mana and hp, also refill the item Bottle.
One of the power runes spawn randomly on one of the sides of the river every two minutes starting from minute six. These runes include Haste
, Double Damage
, Regeneration
,
Illusion
, Invisibility
, and
Arcane Rune
.
Runes are automaticaly used once you pick them up, but you can also store them in the item Bottle
, for example here is the Bottle with invisibility rune inside
Lotus Pools are located near the safe lane and offlane areas. Lotuses spawn every three minutes and can be combined into stronger healing items over time. They provide health and mana restoration and are especially useful during the laning stage.

The Tormentor is a powerful neutral objective that spawns at minute 20. Defeating the Tormentor grants an Aghanim’s Shard to a random ally who does not already have one. Tormentors are difficult to kill and require team coordination.
He spawn at the corner of the map and changes his position to another corner every 5 minutes.

Experience Shrines provide bonus experience when activated and help teams recover or gain an advantage. They spaw every 7 minutes for both sides.
It gives you and your teammate experience when you stay in its area for a while. You can also steal experience from your enemies, but it can be dangerous.

They spawn here.
Losing is part of learning Dota 2. Beginners should review their games, think about what went wrong, and focus on improving one thing at a time. Progress comes from consistency, not from winning every match. Remember first 500 hours in Dota 2 is just a "tutorial".
You can download the replay at the end of the game and check what went wrong.
On the next lesson we will talk about Laning Phase Tips, About items and what do they do, Teamfighting Basics, Communication and Shotcalling. Have a good day
