Second Conditional

Про що говоримо?

В умовних реченнях другого типу ми говоримо про нереальні події в сьогоденні або про події в майбутньому з дуже низькою ймовірністю. А також про майже нездійсненні мрії, бажання, очікування. Українською це звучить приблизно так: «Якби ти дотримувався цієї умови, ти (міг) би … (подія б наступила)».

Структура, правила та приклади

У підрядній частині умовного речення такого типу використовується Past Simple, у головній — Subjunctive Mood.

У підрядному реченні дієслово to be в минулому часі використовується тільки у множині — were, а не was — навіть тоді, коли підмет в однині.

І хоча в розмовній мові варіант з was після підмета в однині (як на відео) все ж є припустимим і останнім часом стає все більш поширеним, на іспитах, таких як ЗНО, Cambridge English, IELTS і TOEFL, ми дуже рекомендуємо використовувати класичне were.

• If + Past Simple + Subjunctive Mood

If I lived in Barcelona, I would have a good tan almost all year long.
If Natalie were more supportive, we would be best friends.

Окрім цього, Second Conditional використовується, щоб сказати: що б ми зробили або яким чином поводилися б на місці іншої людини. Це можна перекласти українською так: «Якби я був тобою, я б…» або «На твоєму місці я б…»:

If I were you, I would travel more

Також замість умовного способу в головній частині умовного речення можна використовувати модальні дієслова could, should, might, must:

If it was sunny, we would go to the park.
