Everything you should know about e-waste management

The figures speak for themselves. The volume of electronic waste grows in India by 20% every year. Printers, laptops, desktops, telephones, etc. They make our work more comfortable, but we must be responsible and not close our eyes to the consequences that incorrect management of this type of scrap can bring.

First of all, what is WEEE?

This is the name of waste electrical and electronic equipment, including its components, consumables and other materials that comprise them. The electrical and electronic equipment are those which, to function, need an electric current or electromagnetic field with a voltage lower operating at 1000 V in alternating current and 1,500 V DC.

How are they managed?

Which sets out the obligations of producers, distributors and citizens regarding their selective collection and proper environmental management?

Domestic users must carry out their segregation through municipal collection systems known as Clean Points and through points of distribution and sale. For its part, the WEEE generated by the companies must be collected at the center itself or through wholesale distributors to transfer them to the waste classification and treatment plants depending on whether they are dangerous or not dangerous. For example, the outside of a printer is non-hazardous waste, while some of its components such as toner or fusers are considered hazardous and therefore need to be recycled in a different way.

Although the ultimate responsibility for the proper management of WEEE lies with the producer or, where appropriate, the distributor, we must all be aware of the importance of recycling it.

What do I do with the WEEE from my business?

If you work as a freelancer or in your office there are not a lot of devices of this type, you can be the one who goes to the nearest Clean Point for their correct recycling. You can also take it to the store where you purchased it because they are obliged to pick it up even if you don't buy a new one.

Another solution, much more convenient and that guarantees compliance with the Law in terms of WEEE management, is for the distributor to take care of its recycling. Your distributor will be in charge of collecting all the waste in the company and taking it to a temporary storage space from which it will be distributed to the recycling centers in the correct way.

This is an issue that worries many companies, not only because of environmental awareness, but because those that have an Environmental Management System and e-waste management authorization need specific documentation that justifies their proper management.

If you have bought the electrical and electronic equipment of your business, the process is much more uncomfortable since you must be in charge of moving them. However, another of the great advantages of renting your company's printers and computers is that it will be the distributor, that is, the company with whom you have signed the computer leasing contract, which will take care of everything.
