This week, my schoolkids explored the magic of St. Patrick’s Day! For our students, including those with autism and hard-hearing, we focused on creating a sensory-friendly and engaging lesson that celebrated Irish culture while building English skills.
We started with a fun visual story about leprechauns, rainbows, and pots of gold. The kids loved pointing out symbols like the green hat, horseshoe, and shamrock. To make the lesson interactive, we used colourful flashcards and hands-on activities, like crafting paper shamrocks and matching words to pictures.
For our students with autism, we incorporated sensory breaks and clear, step-by-step instructions to keep everyone comfortable and focused. We also used repetition and visual aids to reinforce vocabulary, such as “green,” “rainbow,” and “seventeen.”
By the end of the lesson, the kids were proudly sharing their crafts and using new English words. It was a joyful way to learn about St. Patrick’s Day while having fun with kids.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day from our classroom to yours! 🍀🌈
