Many of us know people who hardly ever seem to fail even if their chances of success are low. They do little revision before an exam and get questions just about what they have studied. Or, they go to a job interview and get the job although they are not the best candidates. Fortune always seems to smile on them.

However, most people do not like to think that they are simply born fortunate and they would not succeed without their good luck. Studies have shown that a lot of those lucky people come to believe that they owe their success to their own talents and abilities rather than just luck.

Not surprisingly, those who think of themselves as the lucky ones are optimists. They believe that their luck will continue in their lives. They hardly ever waste time worrying about any difficulties that life might bring and even if it does, they are sure to deal with them successfully.

When I came back to the flat I was sharing with Mark, a college friend, it was already past midnight. I had spent the weekend in my hometown with my parents, and I was feeling quite relaxed. (1)___ And my good mood disappeared a second later. I nearly fell over Mark’s sports bag, which he’d carelessly left in the middle of the hall. His shoes and tennis stuff were lying all around the floor. I took off my coat and went to the kitchen to have some tea. It was the same old story there. There was a pile of dirty dishes in the sink. And the bin was so full that some rubbish had fallen over it onto the floor. Angry, I dashed to the living room, which I’d carefully tidied on Friday before leaving the place. The awful smell of cigarette smoke hit my nose as soon as I opened the door. ‘I’ve asked him a thousand times not to smoke in the flat!’ The living room wasn’t any better than the kitchen. The small table was cluttered with his CDs and books. It was full of cigarette ends and gave off a terrible smell.

‘I’ve had enough of that!’ I thought as I walked angrily into his bedroom.

It is not far from the city centre, on the 10th floor of a block of flats, and the view is just great. My room overlooks the Vistula river and the city centre. Of course, you need a lift to get upstairs – walking would be exhausting. My room is unfurnished, so I need to think about buying some furniture. I’m looking for a second-hand desk and a bed on the Internet, as I don’t want to spend too much money on them. There’s no bath, just a shower. My flatmates are very nice, and I don’t have to do too much housework, just sweep the floor and tidy my room of course.
