The extra-terrestrial knight
In the British countryside, there are many ancient sites and ruins. Some are famous, like Stonehenge, but others are less well known. One of these is a hill in Shropshire called Grinshill. It's not so big, but it has an interesting history. In the past, people used the stone from the hill to build houses, but now it is a beautiful place to walk and see the view. If you go up the hill, you will find three large stones. These are the remains of a medieval castle. In the 12th century, there was a battle here between King Stephen and the Earl of Chester. The king won the battle, but the castle was destroyed. Today, very little of the castle remains, but there is one other thing to see on the hill: a tomb. This is the grave of a knight called Sir Humphrey Kynaston. He lived in the 16th century, and he was a robber. He stole from the rich and gave to the poor, like Robin Hood. When the police tried to catch him, he ran away on his horse, which could jump over rivers and hedges. The police never caught him, and he became a hero. But how did Sir Humphrey die? There are two stories. One story says that he was badly injured in a fight with another robber, and he died on the hill. The other story is more exciting. It says that he jumped his horse off the hill and landed safely in a field. Then he got on a ship and went to live in France. So what do you think? Are the stories true? Did Sir Humphrey really die on Grinshill, or did he escape to France? We don't know, and we probably never will. But when you walk up the hill and look at the view, you can imagine Sir Humphrey riding his horse and jumping off the hill.
